Saturnia

Saturnia is a charming Tuscan village, one of the oldest cities in Italy and one of the most evocative attractions to explore in Maremma. The village gives its name to the spa town but is also a place rich in history. Among the streets of its historic center you can admire splendid ancient buildings, the city walls and the ancient Roman columns. The history of Saturnia dates back to the Neolithic, when there was a primitive settlement. Subsequently, Saturnia was part of the dominions of ancient Caletra and, under the government of the Etruscans, experienced a period of great development, as evidenced today by the numerous necropolises surrounding the Tuscan town. The oldest of these dates back to the 8th century BC, together with the city walls, whose original structure was built by the Etruscans. With the fall of Vulci, Saturnia passed under the Roman Empire and first became a Sabatina colony and subsequently a prefecture. Already in Etruscan and Roman times, its waters were known for their beneficial and healing properties, and the Romans were the first to build the spa.

What to see in Saturnia:
  • Church of Santa Maria Maddalena, the only church in Saturnia, built near the Porta Romana, inside there are some beautiful paintings, San Francesco d’Assisi, Madonna and Child between Saints Sebastian and Mary Magdalene and Saints Clare and Elizabeth of Hungary.
  • Cinta Muraria, built by the Etruscans and fortified in the Roman epic, the walls stood to protect the ancient town, the only access gate, Porta Romana, stands right on the route of the ancient Via Clodia.
  • Archaeological Museum, interesting exhibition of finds from the necropolises surrounding the city of Saturnia.
